In this article, I’m exploring a question recently raised by a reader:

The question is this

Will adopting AI and Robotics in my company change the way the Human Resource (HR) function operates?

In my view, the answer is yes. As companies increasingly assign AI tools and robots to roles previously performed by human employees, the word workforce no longer means just human workforce. As a CEO, be aware that managing people in your company will come with new responsibilities and questions such as: 1. What drives competitive advantage in talent strategy - attracting top talent to work alongside AI and robots or the reverse? 2. How should employees be trained and evaluated? Is it how to complete tasks on their own or how to get AI tools to do the work for them? 3. What is the right labor size in a hybrid human-AI workforce? 4. How should human employees interact and communicate with AI tools and robots in the workplace? 5. How should the workplace environment be designed for this hybrid human-AI workforce? 6. What are the ethical boundaries around AI displacing employees? 7. What skills will your HR teams needs to have - Machine Learning? Psychology? 8. Is the term HR still appropriate or should it perhaps change to say Integrated resources (IR)? These questions and considerations will mean new roles for HR and new definitions of old roles. Examples could be: 1. Workforce Planner Analyze the impact of AI and robotics on the workforce and plan for the transition, including reskilling and redeployment of employees.  2. Change Management Specialist Develop and implement strategies to manage the organizational change and cultural shifts brought about by the integration of AI and robotics  3. Ethical AI Coordinator Ensure the responsible and ethical use of AI and robotics, addressing issues such as bias, transparency, and privacy 4. Human-AI Collaboration developer Foster effective collaboration between human employees and their AI/robotic counterparts, ensuring smooth integration and optimal performance 5. Hybrid Talent Acquisition Strategist Identify and attract the right talent to work alongside AI and robotics, focusing on complementary skill sets
